 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  ‘Everything’ll be all right — Tinubu’s daughter asks Nigerians to be patient with her father


Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu, says the current economic hardship is not peculiar to Nigeria alone.


Speaking with journalists at the 2024 Mawlid Nabiyy of the Lagos state chapter of Aljamahatul Qadiriyyah Islamic Movement, Tinubu-Ojo, said the world is experiencing an economic downturn.


However, the president’s daughter, who is also the Iyaloja General of Lagos, urged Nigerians to have patience and keep hope alive.


“My message to all Nigerians is to please exercise a little more patience. Everything will be alright; it’s just a matter of time,” she said.


“We need to keep our hope alive. There is an economic downturn all over the world, and not in Nigeria alone. But we pray Allah will see us through.”


Earlier, her brother, Seyi, provoked a chorus of condemnation on Monday after he urged Nigerians to be patient with the current administration. 


In an Instagram post, Seyi pleaded with Nigerians to endure the current economic hardship.


Seyi, while quoting his dad in the post, said Nigerians need to endure the trying times for “a better future”.


“There is no joy in seeing the people of this nation shoulder burdens that should have been shed years ago. I wish today’s difficulties did not exist. But we must endure if we are to reach the good side of our future,” – President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Bola A Tinubu,” he wrote.


Seyi’s post, however, did not go down well with many Nigerians on social media.


The remarks from the children of the president come at a time when many Nigerians are protesting against the economic hardship in the country.


Residents of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, took to the streets on Monday to decry the state of the nation.


 Protests have also been staged in Kano, Ogun, Niger and Sokoto states.


The labour union has also announced a nationwide protest on February 27 and 28 over the rising cost of living.


Food prices have been on the rise since President Tinubu pronounced an end to the petrol subsidy regime on May 29, 2023.


There have also been reports about an imminent increase in the cost of fuel from N585.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
