 Police Blocks Anti-Hunger Protest in Jigawa


The Nigeria Police Force has foiled and blocked a public peaceful demonstration against hunger, social and economic difficulties organized by civil societies, political groups and some members of public in Jigawa state.


Radio Nigeria Correspondent reports that hundreds of anti-riot police squad were stationed at various strategic locations around Dutse, the state capital to block the protest from taken place.


According to the Public Relations Officer of the state Police command, DSP Shi'isu Lawal Adam, police saw the announcement of the protest on social media and going by the public comments there is tendency to have total breakdown of public peace and order if allowed.


He said, an intelligence gathering has proved that, some miscreants have planned to hijacked the demonstration, therefore as a proactive measures police urged the organizers to suspend the protest.


When contacted, one of the organizers, the Chairman Sawaba Initiative for Humanitarian Development, Comrade Bashir Alkasim said, less than 10 hours to the commencement of the protest police invited them for discussion.


He explained that, the state police commissioner requested them to postpone the demonstration due to some issues around public security, and  they have no way than to succumb to security pressure and withdraw their plan.


Comrade Bashir explained that, they wanted to hold the peaceful demonstration for calling the attention of federal state and local governments on the current hunger crisis, social and economic difficulties in the country, also the need for the authority to do what is needful to rescue the situation that keeps degenerating on daily basis. 


They called on President Bola Ahmed Tinbu to review his economic policy to align it with needs and welfare of Nigerians than the foreign interest, the local government financial autonomy shall also be revisited and granted fully. 


He also called on the Jigawa state Governor, Malam Umar Namadi to increase the workers wage award from proposed N10,000 to N30,000 and should be paid before the month Ramadan.
