The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to hold an emergency meeting to address the uncertainty surrounding the future of Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle. According to sources, Chelle is considering terminating his contract as the team's manager. The development comes amidst Nigeria's struggles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With only seven points from six games, the Super Eagles are currently fourth in Group C, behind leaders South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin Republic. Pressure has been mounting on Chelle, prompting him to travel to Europe in search of reinforcements to bolster the team's defense. However, the uncertainty surrounding his future with the team has reportedly led to a change of heart, with Chelle now considering terminating his contract. The NFF's emergency meeting aims to address the situation and find a resolution. The fate of Chelle and the Super Eagles' World Cup qualifying campaign hang in the balance.

2026 WCQ: Why Super Eagles lost to Benin Republic ā€“ Finidi

Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George says poor defending and loss of concentration were responsible for his sideā€™s 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.

The former African champions now have a mountain to climb in their bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the shocking defeat.

Nigeria remain in fifth position in the Group C table with three points from four games.

It was the second time the Cheetahs would beat the Super Eagles in 17 meetings.

Gernot Rohrā€™s men top the standings with seven points.

ā€œWe scored a good goal and after that we lost concentration, they got their equaliser and then they got their momentum,ā€ Finidi said during his interaction with media after the game.

ā€œWe didnā€™t defend well the long kick from the goalkeeper and they got their first goal.

ā€œWe had control of the game, but we didnā€™t defend well.

ā€œIf you donā€™t take your chances and donā€™t defend well in a World Cup qualifier, you pay for it.

ā€œFirst half was good but for the goals (we conceded), while in the second half we pushed and defended well.ā€
