First £1 coins to feature King Charles enter circulation in UK

The new one pound coins featuring King Charles III have been officially released in the UK. These coins highlight King Charles III's passion for conservation and the natural world, with a design showcasing a pair of British bees on the "tails" side.

Rebecca Morgan, director of Commemorative Coins at The Royal Mint, announced on Tuesday that nearly three million of these coins will be in circulation this week, via post offices and banks throughout the UK gradually replacing the older coins featuring the effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II as they become worn or damaged.

In addition to the one pound coin, there are seven other new designs representing different denominations, all inspired by flora and fauna to reflect the king's dedication to the environment. The release of these coins aims to spark important conversations about the conservation of these species, and the designs are expected to rotate based on demand.

A public poll by the Royal Mint revealed that the one pound bee coin was a favorite, closely followed by the 2p red squirrel. The coins also feature a repeating pattern of three interlocking Cs, which pays tribute to Charles II through his cypher. Furthermore, the number indicating the value of the coins has been enlarged to assist children with their counting skills.

This historic release follows the circulation of banknotes with the king's portrait, introduced in June. This milestone marks the first time that the sovereign's portrait has been changed on the Bank of England's banknotes.
