 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  US announces $27m humanitarian aid for Nigeria



The U.S. government has unveiled a $27 million humanitarian aid package specifically for Nigeria, aimed at supporting vulnerable populations and enhancing resilience against food insecurity and climate change impacts. The announcement was made by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja, underscoring the commitment of the U.S. to address critical humanitarian needs in the region.


U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, highlighted the significance of the aid, stating, “This funding represents our ongoing commitment to support Nigeria in its efforts to combat food insecurity and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. We are dedicated to helping communities build resilience and ensure sustainable development.” Leonard’s comments reflect the broader scope of the aid package as part of a larger $536 million initiative for sub-Saharan Africa.


The U.S. Mission emphasized that this allocation is a crucial component of its humanitarian efforts across the continent. “Our goal is to provide immediate relief while also fostering long-term solutions to the pressing issues of food insecurity and climate resilience,” said the U.S. Mission spokesperson. The aid is expected to significantly impact communities in Nigeria, offering both immediate support and a foundation for future stability.
