 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. As Saturday’s off-cycle governorship election in Edo State approaches, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 379,245 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), representing 14.43%, remain uncollected.


Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, revealed this in a statement on Tuesday.


Despite a three-day extension granted by INEC following a stakeholders’ meeting, aimed at ensuring a successful election, a significant number of PVCs are still uncollected.


The total number of registered voters in Edo State stands at 2,629,025. Of these, 2,249,780 (85.57%) have collected their PVCs, while 379,245 (14.43%) are still pending collection as of the end of the extended period on Sunday, 16th September 2024.

In preparation for the election, INEC has released data on PVC collection by Polling Unit (PU) across the 4,519 PUs in the state.


Olumekun said the detailed breakdown of PVCs collected and those uncollected per unit has been uploaded to INEC’s website for the benefit of political parties, candidates, and the public.
