Cameroon Youth Reluctant to Use Condoms, Leading to Health Concerns

Many young people in Cameroon are avoiding condom use due to discomfort and misconceptions, leading to increased rates of unwanted pregnancies and STDs. Despite condoms being vital for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancies, many youths feel they reduce sexual pleasure or cause irritation.

A recent study found a sharp decline in condom use among Cameroonian youths, with 50% holding misconceptions, 30% unaware of their importance, and only 10% fully understanding their benefits. Some mistakenly believe condoms are only for preventing pregnancy and overlook their role in stopping diseases like HIV, syphilis, and gonorrhea.

In Yaoundé, interviews conducted by some journalist of Mimi Mefo Info revealed a common preference for methods like withdrawal over condoms, with many youths unaware or unwilling to use them. A secondary school teacher noted that lack of sexual education in schools contributes to these issues.

The drop in condom use has affected sales, with most purchases now made by adults, and rural areas seeing even lower awareness. The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over this global trend, emphasizing the need for better sexual health education.

There is a clear need for increased awareness and education about the benefits of condoms and sexual health, particularly in rural areas where access to contraceptives is limited.
