French Man Faces Trial for Drugging Wife and Allowing Strangers to Rape Her

The trial of a French pensioner, Dominique P., has shocked the nation as he stands accused of orchestrating the rape of his wife by dozens of men over a decade, all while she was drugged and unaware of the abuse. Fifty men are being tried alongside Dominique P. in Avignon for their involvement in the crime, which allegedly took place in the couple's home in Mazan, France, and began when they lived near Paris in 2011.

Dominique P., a 71-year-old former employee of France's power utility company, EDF, is accused of recruiting the men online through a now-shut-down website and drugging his wife with powerful tranquillisers, such as Temesta, leaving her in a state akin to a coma. Investigators discovered hundreds of videos and images on his computer showing his unconscious wife being raped by the men, whom Dominique encouraged and directed during the assaults.

The horrific case, involving 92 rapes by 72 men, has brought to light the disturbing actions of Dominique P., who also faces charges related to a 1991 murder and rape, as well as an attempted rape in 1999. The defence for the accused men claims they were participating in what they believed to be consensual acts with a libertine couple, but Dominique P. admitted to informing them of his wife's drugged state.

The trial, expected to continue until December 20, will be a painful ordeal for the victim, who, supported by her three children, has chosen to face her attackers in open court to ensure the crimes are publicly acknowledged.
