The Labour Party has been plunged into deeper crisis following the emergence of Senator Nenadi Esther Usman as the new national chairperson, alongside Darlington Nwokocha as national secretary, during a stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, Abia State. However, a faction of the party led by Julius Abure has rejected the outcome of the meeting, describing it as āillegal and unconstitutionalā.
The faction, in a press release signed by National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, argued that the meeting was not recognized by the partyās constitution, the Electoral Act, or the Nigerian Constitution. They claimed that the meeting was not an organ of the party, as it was not listed in the partyās constitution.
The faction also challenged Governor Alex Otti to produce official correspondence from INEC regarding objections to the partyās national convention, stating that no such communication existed. They questioned the legitimacy of the caretaker committee set up by the governor, pointing out that its chairman was not a registered member of the party.
This development comes after Senator Usmanās election was seen as a move to resolve the internal crisis within the party. However, the rejection of the outcome by the faction has further deepened the crisis, leaving the partyās leadership in uncertainty.
The faction emphasized that there was no vacuum in the partyās leadership and rejected the outcome of the Umuahia meeting, describing it as a ācharadeā and a waste of resources. The partyās national leadership remains uncertain, with both factions claiming legitimacy.
