Cameroonians in France Protest Outside Hospital, Demand Biya’s Return

On Sunday, October 6, Cameroonians living abroad gathered outside the Hopital d’instruction des Armées Percy in Clamart, France, where President Paul Biya, 91, is rumored to be receiving medical treatment. The demonstrators urged him to return to Cameroon for his care and criticized his lengthy 41-year rule.

Recent concerns over Biya’s health intensified after he missed major global events, such as the UN General Assembly and the La Francophonie summit. Since his return from China on September 8, the Cameroonian government has remained silent about his whereabouts and health, fueling speculation that he is hospitalized in France.

Protesters, holding signs and chanting against Biya, called for the release of political prisoners and held him responsible for the numerous issues Cameroon has faced during his long time in power. They particularly highlighted the ongoing conflict in the country’s Anglophone regions, which has claimed over 6,000 lives.

This is not the first time Cameroonian diaspora groups have protested Biya’s overseas medical stays. Activist Emmanuel Kemta previously led demonstrations in Switzerland in 2019, forcing the president to return home.
