OCTOBER 1ST PROTEST: SOWORE JOINS PROTESTERS IN LAGOS. (PHOTO).

#October1protest: Sowore joins protesters in Lagos

Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has joined the ongoing protest in Lagos State.

Sowore who is one of the key organisers of the protest arrived at the protest ground at the Ikeja Underbridge at exactly 8:50am.

Addressing newsmen, Sowore said the protest was a crucial step towards taking Nigeria to the “promised land”.

He emphasised that the action symbolised the people’s rejection of the government’s Independence Day celebration

Sowore also questioned whether Nigerians had not given the government enough chances, citing how former President Muhammadu Buhari allegedly misused the additional time given to him.

He said, “This is one of the actions that will take us to the promised land. We did it in August and today is a symbolic day to reject their own independence as we want our independence.”

“Have we not tried enough? We have no time left. We gave more time, look at what Buhari did with more time. We gave them more time they bought themselves a private jet, we gave them more time, they bought a new house, they increased fuel price. We gave him more time they put us in darkness.

“We gave them more time they gave us minimum wage and gave themselves a maximum wage. Let them resign, that is how we will know they actually understand how people feel this time around.”

Protesters, on Tuesday morning, gathered at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos State as the country marks the 64th Independence Day.

The protest, however, is being closely monitored by a large contingent of security personnel, including policemen, officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Meanwhile, the protesters are currently marching along the Awolowo Way.

Social activist, Omoyele Sowore, has arrived at the Ikeja under bridge on Tuesday to lead the EndBadGovernance protest, calling for urgent reforms amidst Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges

The social activist was seen alongside a large crowd of protesters, many holding placards, with inscriptions such as “End Economic Crisis” and “Bad Governance Must End.” Demonstrators gathered under heavy police presence, demanding immediate government action to address the nation’s escalating economic woes.

Sowore, one of the main organisers of the protest, had called for a nationwide demonstration on October 1 to press for solutions to the deepening economic crisis affecting Nigerians. The protest has drawn attention across the country, coinciding with Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Mustapha Fayoade, confirmed the presence of law enforcement at the event, emphasising the police’s commitment to ensuring public safety. “The police are ready to support in securing the people, but the protesters must comply with the rules and maintain order,” Fayoade said in a brief statement.

Despite the tense atmosphere, the protest remained largely peaceful, with organisers urging participants to continue demonstrating in a non-violent manner while calling for governmental accountability and transparency.
