Rivers crisis threat to national security ā€“Natasha

The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the political crisis rocking Rivers State, describing it as a threat to national security and stability.

The lawmaker in a statement on Tuesday by her Chief Press Secretary, Arogbonlo Israel, also asked the FCT Minister and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, to allow his successor, Governor Sim Fubara, to govern the state as mandated by the constitution.

Wike and Fubara have been at daggers drawn over the control of politics and governance in Rivers, a development which ignited political crisis in the state.

The crisis has led to killings of innocent citizens, burning down of government institutions, defection of some politicians in the state from one political party to another and breakdown of law and order.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasised the need for presidential intervention to protect citizensā€™ lives and property, ensure neutrality of state institutions to promote peace and justice and prevent further escalation of the crisis.

She said, ā€œThe situation in Rivers demands urgent attention, and I implore Mr President to take decisive action to prevent further escalation. We cannot afford to watch as the crisis deepens, threatening the stability of the region. President Tinubuā€™s leadership is crucial in resolving this impasse.

ā€œIf left unchecked, the crisis may undermine Nigeriaā€™s democratic progress, embolden perpetrators of violence and electoral malpractices, and threaten national security and stability.ā€
