 Mali renames colonial French street names Mali followed Burkina Faso and Niger on Wednesday in renaming streets and squares in its capital to get rid of their French colonial names, AFP reported. Streets bearing the names of members of France's colonial administration have been rebaptised in Bamako, according to a decree by the junta chief. Cedeao Avenue (the French acronym for the Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS) is also now named after a new strategic confederation that Mali has formed with Burkina Faso and Niger – the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). In all, nearly 25 names have been replaced, among them boulevards, streets, squares and public establishments. Niger and Burkina Faso have already made several changes to street and monument names in the last two years. In October, Niger renamed several historic sites in its capital Niamey which previously bore references to old colonial master France.  LASUBEB MARKS WORLD DISABILITY DAY, CALLS FOR INCLUSION, EMPOWERMENT


The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) recently joined the global community to mark World Disability Day for 2024 with an event themed: “Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality”, held at the Board’s Multi-Purpose Hall.


In his keynote address, LASUBEB’s Secretary, Mr. Hakeem Lamidi emphasised the Board’s dedication to fostering an inclusive educational environment for all children in Lagos State and expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government and private organizations for their support of inclusive education.


The Secretary, who was represented by Mrs. Abimbola Vaughan, reaffirmed the Board’s dedication to diversity and equity in education, saying “Our commitment to inclusivity is a testament to our belief that every child deserves an opportunity to thrive, regardless of their abilities”.


Mrs. Omolara Ajetumobi, Founder of the "You Matter to Us Foundation", reiterated her organisation’s unwavering support for children with disabilities and their rights, calling for sustained collaboration to enhance their well-being.


Mrs. Hilda Twins, Head of the Early Child Care Development Education Unit at LASUBEB, highlighted the significance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities as an opportunity to mobilise support for the dignity and rights of individuals with disabilities.


The advocacy programme brought together educators, parents, disability rights advocates, and representatives from non-governmental organisations. The event featured cultural performances and inspiring testimonials that highlighted the resilience and potential of children with disabilities.
