MALI RENAMES COLONIAL FRENCH STREET NAMES. (PHOTO).

 Mali renames colonial French street names Mali followed Burkina Faso and Niger on Wednesday in renaming streets and squares in its capital to get rid of their French colonial names, AFP reported. Streets bearing the names of members of France's colonial administration have been rebaptised in Bamako, according to a decree by the junta chief. Cedeao Avenue (the French acronym for the Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS) is also now named after a new strategic confederation that Mali has formed with Burkina Faso and Niger – the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). In all, nearly 25 names have been replaced, among them boulevards, streets, squares and public establishments. Niger and Burkina Faso have already made several changes to street and monument names in the last two years. In October, Niger renamed several historic sites in its capital Niamey which previously bore references to old colonial master France.  Troops from  6 Brigade Nigerian Army, in conjunction with Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, have dealt a significant blow to bandits operating in Taraba and Benue States. 

The operation, codenamed "Operation Golden Peace," aims to restore peace and security in the region.


On December 7, 2024, the troops launched a well-coordinated clearance operation in the Akahagu and China villages of Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State. The operation extended to Ikayor village, where troops engaged bandits linked to the notorious criminal Akiki Utiv, also known as "Full Fire."


The bandits were forced to flee after troops applied overwhelming firepower. A red Toyota Corolla vehicle, a motorcycle, and various items, including a military camouflage trouser and a Beretta pistol, were recovered.


Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade, commended the troops for their bravery and resilience. He assured residents of Taraba and Benue States that the military remains committed to maintaining peace and security in the region.
