UPDATE: RUSSIA PLANS TO INTRODUCE VISA-FREE TRAVEL FOR INDIAN TOURISTS BY SPRING 2025 TO BOOST BILATERAL TIES AND TOURISM. (PHOTO).

Indians might soon enjoy visa-free travel to Russia as the two nations work towards easing travel restrictions. A new system, likely to begin by spring 2025, is under discussion to implement visa-free group tourist exchanges. Talks between India and Russia regarding this agreement were first reported in June this year. This initiative aims to strengthen bilateral ties and boost tourism between the two countries.

Currently, Indian nationals require a visa issued by the Russian Embassy or Consulates to enter, stay, or exit Russia. The process has been lengthy and cumbersome for travelers. However, since August 2023, Indian citizens have been able to apply for e-visas to Russia, which are processed in about four days. Last year, India ranked among the top five countries in terms of e-visas issued, with 9,500 Indian travelers benefiting from this system, according to The Indian Express.

Russia hopes to replicate the success of its visa-free tourist exchange programs with China and Iran by extending the same privilege to Indian travelers. These programs have significantly boosted tourism for Moscow, and Indian visitors have also shown increased interest in Russia. In 2023, over 60,000 Indians traveled to Moscow, a 26% rise from 2022. Early this year, India ranked third among non-CIS countries for business tourism, with 1,700 e-visas issued in the first quarter alone.

India currently enjoys visa-free travel to 62 countries, including popular destinations like Indonesia, Maldives, and Thailand. Ranked 82nd on the Henley Passport Index 2024, an Indian passport offers several travel opportunities. If finalized, the visa-free agreement with Russia would be a significant addition, opening up new possibilities for both tourism and business exchanges between the two nations.
