The Federal Government has confirmed a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (bird flu) outbreak in Kano State. The disease, which affects various bird species including layers, ducks, guinea fowls, and turkeys, has raised concerns about its potential spread in the region.
In a circular, Dr. Columba Teru Vakuru, Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, urged state veterinary offices and relevant agencies to activate surveillance systems immediately. He stressed the importance of strict biosecurity measures and increased public awareness to curb the virus's spread.
Dr. Usman Gwarzo, Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria in Kano, explained that the outbreak was first suspected in December 2024, when a man from Gwale Local Government Area introduced a duck from Janguza market to his flock, which subsequently died along with the chickens. Samples from the deceased birds were tested and confirmed the presence of the virus by early January 2025.
Authorities are advising residents to stay vigilant and report any unusual bird deaths to veterinary officials.
