Benue Govt Affirms Ikpambese’s Removal as Chief Judge

The Benue State Government has reaffirmed its stance on the removal of Justice Maurice Ikpambese as the Chief Judge of the state.

In a statement on Monday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, emphasized that Ikpambese must prepare to defend himself against the allegations leveled against him by the state government.

"The Chief Judge is advised to present his defense before the National Judicial Council (NJC) rather than making unnecessary public statements to garner sympathy," Kula stated.

He reiterated that the Benue State House of Assembly acted within the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria in recommending Ikpambese’s removal.

“The government firmly believes that the lawmakers acted in the best interest of the state and in accordance with Section 292(1)(a)(ii) of the Constitution, which stipulates that a Chief Judge may only be removed by the governor following an address supported by two-thirds of the House of Assembly,” the statement read.

  • Kula further noted that allegations against Ikpambese have been submitted to the NJC for review and disciplinary action, as outlined in Section 153(1)(i) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
