Hit-and-Run Driver Fatally Strikes FUNAAB Professor in Abeokuta

Residents of Ajebo Road Housing Estate, Kemta, Abeokuta, are mourning the tragic death of Professor Oladipo Ademuyiwa, a Biochemical Toxicology expert at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). He was killed by a hit-and-run driver on the newly rehabilitated Kemta-Somorin road on Sunday.

Prof. Ademuyiwa, in his early 60s, had just stepped out of a cab and was attempting to cross the road when a speeding driver struck him and fled the scene.

Dr. Ayo Ajasa, Chairman of the Ajebo Road Housing Estate Community Development Association (CDA), described the professorā€™s death as preventable, blaming the governmentā€™s failure to install speed breakers despite multiple community appeals.

ā€œThis tragic incident highlights the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further loss of life,ā€ Ajasa stated. ā€œDespite repeated pleas, no action has been taken to implement necessary safety measures on this road.ā€

He urged the Ogun State government to install speed breakers, lorry barriers, and proper traffic signage to curb reckless driving. Ajasa also called for stricter law enforcement, warning that another accident occurred within 24 hours of the professorā€™s death, proving the road remains a danger to residents.

ā€œWe hold the government accountable and urge immediate action before more lives are lost,ā€ he added, appealing to civil society and the media to amplify the call for safer roads.
