Dutch referee Rob Dieperink dies weeks after removal from World Cup officiating list Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, weeks after FIFA removed him from its list of officials for the World Cup. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed his death in a statement, saying it was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the news. His cause of death has not been disclosed. Dieperink was arrested in April by the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom following a report of an alleged sexual assault involving a teenage boy in London. JUNE 12 ANNULMENT LED NIGERIANS TO LOSE FAITH IN ELECTIONS- DUROTOYE. (PHOTO).

Fela Durotoye, a former presidential candidate, has condemned the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election by Ibrahim Babangida, saying it had a devastating impact on Nigeria's trajectory as a nation. Durotoye, who was the presidential candidate of the defunct Alliance for New Nigeria, stated that the annulment led Nigerians to conclude that their votes don't count, resulting in electoral apathy.

"The annulment of the June 12 election embedded the notion that 'our votes don't count' into the consciousness of the people," Durotoye said. "This has led to a situation where the majority have become the minority, with only a fraction of registered voters participating in elections."

Durotoye identified four types of votes - mobilized votes, monetized votes, manufactured votes, and manipulated votes - and noted that these categories were not enough to account for even half of the total registered voters in the 2023 general election.

Recently, Babangida admitted in his memoir that Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola won the June 12 election, a revelation that has sparked public conversations. Babangida's admission comes 32 years after he annulled the election, citing "extreme national interest."
