LAGOS ENHANCES ROAD SAFETY, TRAFFIC EFFICIENCY WITH ADDITIONAL INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS
In a move to improve road safety and streamline traffic management, the Lagos State Government has deployed four new Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) sites across four locations in the state. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during a press briefing on Thursday in Alausa.
According to the Commissioner, the new ITS sites will complement existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other Traffic Management Solutions (TMS), reinforcing the state’s commitment to creating a safer and more efficient transportation network.
Mr. Osiyemi explained that the ITS is divided into two main categories; checkpoint sites for speed monitoring and e-police sites for detecting traffic violations. He said the checkpoints have been installed at Alapere (80 km/h speed limit) and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (60 km/h speed limit) with the aim to curb over-speeding, a major contributor to accidents.
The Commissioner also mentioned that e-police sites are installed at Allen Avenue junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road, equipped with high-definition cameras to monitor violations such as running red lights, lane indiscipline, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways.
Speaking further the Commissioner stated that all relevant road signs have been installed to inform motorists of the new regulations, with enforcement set to begin immediately. He said offenders will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) detailing their violations and corresponding fines.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr. Olatunbosun Alake, stated that the ITS will address traffic-related issues such as over speeding, indiscipline on the road through a technology-driven approach, in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a smarter, safer, and more sustainable Lagos.
He further applauded the State Government for delivering the ITS which will reduce human intervention, create positive transportation outcomes and also ensure quality road transportation that is safe for all.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, clarified that the initiative is not aimed at generating revenue but at ensuring voluntary compliance with traffic rules. He added that offenders will have the option to contest fines if they believe they were wrongly issued.
Mr. Olayemi Joseph, Senior Solution Architect at Huawei Technologies, expressed pride in supporting Lagos' traffic management efforts with advanced ITS technology. He highlighted that the system integrates information, communications, sensing, and computing technologies, enabling precise and efficient real-time transportation management.
Recall the that the State Government had earlier introduced technology driven traffic management devices such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition, (ANPR), and Traffic Management Solution, (TMS) to reduce human interference.
