 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter.  Oyo Launches Free Health Insurance for 10,000 Primary School Pupils


The Oyo State Government has officially launched the enrollment of 10,000 public primary school pupils into its health insurance scheme.


Speaking at the flag-off event in Ibadan, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a healthy learning environment for children. The initiative covers 90 schools across 18 local government areas, with enrolled pupils receiving insurance scheme ID cards.


UNICEF Lagos Field Office Chief, Celine Lafoucriere, praised the initiative, stating that it aligns with efforts to achieve universal health coverage, ensuring no child is denied healthcare due to financial constraints. She emphasized that access to healthcare supports education, economic growth, and poverty reduction.


The Chairman of OYOSUBEB, Nureni Adeniran, and Executive Secretary of OYSHIA, Olusola Akande, reaffirmed their commitment to the program’s successful implementation, describing it as a major step toward expanding healthcare access for children across the state.
