A tragic incident occurred on Saturday in Egba, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, as a 14-year-old secondary school student, identified as Nicknes Ayo, took her own life following intense pressure from her mother to disclose the identity of the man responsible for her pregnancy.
According to sources, Nicknes, who was schooling in Otukpo, returned home on Thursday displaying visible signs of pregnancy.
Her mother, upon noticing the changes, confronted her and demanded to know who was responsible. The questioning intensified, with threats to take her to a clinic in the village for confirmation. Unable to bear the pressure, the young girl fled from home.
A neighbor, who identified herself as Mama Enyi, told our correspondent over the phone that the girl was later found in her room, having ingested a substance suspected to be Gammalin, a toxic pesticide.
āShe was rushed to a local clinic known as āGhana Clinicā in the village, but her condition deteriorated,ā Mama Enyi recounted.
Medical director of the clinic, Dr. Oyaje Sule, popularly referred to as Dr. Ghana, confirmed that the girl was brought in on Saturday morning in critical condition.
āShe was suspected to have taken Gammalin after being pressured by her mother to reveal who impregnated her.
When I saw her condition worsening, I immediately referred her to a hospital in Obagaji, the headquarters of Agatu Local Government,ā he explained.
Tragically, Nicknes Ayo did not make it to the hospitalāshe passed away on the way. Reports indicate that the young girl had already lost her father a few years ago, compounding the sorrow in the family.
Following her death, she was buried in her village. Attempts to reach the Agatu Local Government Chairman, Melvin James, for comments were unsuccessful, as his phone remained switched off.
Similarly, efforts to get a statement from Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for the State Command, were futile, as she did not respond to calls.
The tragic case of Nicknes Ayo has sparked conversations about societal pressures, teenage pregnancy, and mental health awareness, raising concerns about the need for improved support systems for young girls in vulnerable situations.
