 Dutch referee Rob Dieperink dies weeks after removal from World Cup officiating list Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, weeks after FIFA removed him from its list of officials for the World Cup. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed his death in a statement, saying it was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the news. His cause of death has not been disclosed. Dieperink was arrested in April by the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom following a report of an alleged sexual assault involving a teenage boy in London. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said officers responded on April 9 to a report of sexual assault at an address in Croydon and arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of the offence.  Bill to Empower Polytechnics to Award B.Tech Degrees Passes Second Reading at Reps


A bill seeking to amend the Federal Polytechnics Act (2004) and expand the functions of polytechnics, including granting them the authority to award Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) Honours degrees, has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.


Hon. Faud Laguda, the bill’s sponsor, stated during Tuesday’s plenary that the amendment aims to broaden the membership of polytechnic councils by including representatives from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).


The proposed amendments also seek to:

Enhance polytechnics' administrative structures for better efficiency.

Raise the qualifications required for the position of Rector.

Expand the powers of the Academic Board to award B.Tech degrees.


Laguda emphasized that the bill is designed to modernize polytechnic education in Nigeria, ensuring it aligns with global best practices while enhancing technical education for students.
