HISTORICAL JOURNEY: SHASORE CHALLENGES LJLA FELLOWS TO RETHINK NIGERIA’S FUTURE

As part of its mission to cultivate informed and visionary leaders, the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) recently hosted a thought-provoking country analysis session featuring Mr. Olasupo Shasore, SAN, former Attorney-General of Lagos State. The session, titled “Nigeria: Its History and Its Future”, offered Fellows a deep dive into the Nation’s historical journey and its implications for leadership and governance.

Mr. Shasore, a renowned legal expert and historian, underscored the crucial role of history in shaping national identity and decision-making. “A nation that does not know its history is like a tree without roots. Without understanding where we are coming from, we cannot truly chart a course for where we are going” he stated, emphasising the need to integrate historical studies into Nigeria’s education system.

The session explored Nigeria’s evolution from pre-colonial times to the present, shedding light on how past events influence contemporary governance, policies, and leadership. Mr. Shasore further highlighted the contributions of citizens in shaping the nation’s trajectory, reinforcing the idea that every Nigerian has a role to play in building a prosperous future.

Speaking on the significance of the discussion, the Executive Secretary of LJLA, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade reiterated the Academy’s commitment to producing leaders who are not only skilled but also deeply knowledgeable about Nigeria’s socio-political landscape. “At LJLA, we believe that leadership without historical consciousness is incomplete. Our goal is to equip our Fellows with the knowledge and perspective needed to drive meaningful change”, she remarked.

Reflecting on the session, Olumide Faniran, a Fellow of the Academy, expressed his renewed appreciation for Nigeria’s historical context. “This session has reshaped my understanding of our Nation’s journey. It has reinforced my responsibility as an emerging leader to not only learn from history but also contribute to shaping a better future for Nigeria”, he shared.
