SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. However, proceedings were cut short after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives.  Ogun Govt Hails Tinubu as FG Adopts TASUED as Federal University

The Ogun State Government has praised the Federal Government for adopting Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) as a federal institution, a move expected to enhance its growth and sustainability.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, described the transition as a positive transformation for Nigeria’s first specialized university of education. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to educational advancement, ensuring TASUED remains a center of excellence in teacher education.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the transition following an invitation from the Ogun State Government, acknowledging TASUED’s crucial role in teacher education and honoring the legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Tai Solarin. He also recognized the intervention of the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a key role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012.

With this transition, TASUED joins Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education and Adeyemi Federal University of Education as one of only three universities of education in the country. The adoption aligns with the Federal Government’s vision to strengthen teacher training and enhance educational standards.

TASUED is now among seven newly established Federal Universities of Education, alongside institutions in Kano, Zaria, Ondo, Owerri, Pankshin, and Kontagora. The transition is expected to boost funding, improve infrastructure, and elevate TASUED’s national recognition, further solidifying Ogun State’s reputation as an academic hub.
