Palace Crisis: Oba of Benin wields axe, suspends 67 Enigie for defiance

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Benin Kingdom, the revered Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has wielded his royal authority, suspending 67 Enigie over allegations of rebellion and defiance against the palace.

The Benin Traditional Council, in a strongly worded statement on Friday, declared that the affected Enigie were guilty of “anti-palace and rebellious activities” that undermined the sacred traditional institution.

Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, confirmed the development, stating that the suspension was immediate and non-negotiable.

“The decision was taken by His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, due to their blatant acts of insubordination against the revered Benin throne,” Irabor announced.

The list of the suspended Enigie, including prominent figures such as Prof. Gregory Akenzua and Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen, has been circulated for official recognition and enforcement.

However, the embattled Enigie have not gone down without a fight. Some had already dragged the matter to a Benin High Court, arguing that the Oba lacked the legal authority to suspend them under the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law.

This escalating power struggle has cast a spotlight on the delicate balance between ancient traditions and modern governance, raising questions about the extent of royal authority in the contemporary legal framework.
