China’s finance ministry announced on Wednesday that it will raise tariffs on US imports from 34% to 84%, effective Thursday at 12:01 pm, in a swift response to new US tariffs that took effect earlier the same day. The escalation follows US President Donald Trump’s imposition of steep duties on dozens of trading partners, including a punishing 104% tariff on Chinese goods, intensifying the ongoing trade war between the two economic giants.
Beijing condemned the US actions, with the finance ministry stating that Washington’s tariff hikes “simply pile mistakes on top of mistakes” and “severely infringe on China’s legitimate rights and interests.” The ministry further criticized the moves as a blow to the “multilateral rules-based trade system.” China vowed to take “firm and forceful” measures to safeguard its interests, signaling a robust counteroffensive.
In addition to the tariff increase, China’s commerce ministry announced it would blacklist six US artificial intelligence companies, including Shield AI Inc. and Sierra Nevada Corp, accusing them of either selling arms to Taiwan or collaborating on military technology with the island. The blacklist marks another layer of retaliation amid heightened tensions.
