 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter.  Man steps out of car, hangs self in Umuahia


A man identified as Chukwuka Nwosu, from Itaja Obuohia in Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA of Abia State was on Thursday, discovered dead, after allegedly committing suicide.


Chukwuka’s lifeless body was discovered dangling on a tree in front of a building along a road in University community, Umudike.


The young man was said to have parked his Toyota Corolla car very close to the scene of the crime, before taking his life.


The incident jolted the community and those who knew the youngman as some of them called for a thorough investigation into his death.


There had been no official confirmation by the state government or the Police as at the time of this report.


A graduate, Chukwuka, was said to have hailed from a comfortable home and also exhibited no sign of distress prior to the incident.


An indigene of Olokoro who confirmed the sad development on Saturday, said the scene of the incident was visited by Police while some certain traditions were performed by the villagers before the corpse of the suicide victim was taken to the mortuary.
