Rebels to withdraw from key DR Congo town 'after US request' The M23 rebel group has said it would withdraw from the eastern DR Congo town of Uvira at the request of the US administration, which had criticised seizure of the town last week as a threat to mediation efforts. The rebels entered Uvira, on the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met with US President Donald Trump in Washington and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept." A report by a United Nations group of experts in July said Rwanda exercised command and control over the rebels. Rwanda denies supporting M23 and has blamed Congolese and Burundian forces for the renewed fighting. Corneille Nangaa, leader of the Congo River Allia...

Rivers PDP Caucus Endorses Tinubu for 2027 Re-election

Members of the Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the National Assembly have announced their unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. The declaration was made in a joint statement signed by the caucus and read to journalists by Senator Barry Mpigi in Port Harcourt on Saturday. The caucus, which includes two Senators—Barry Mpigi and Allwell Onyesoh—and seven House of Representatives members—Rt. Hon. Dumnamene Dekor, Solomon Bob, Felix Nwaeke, Kelechi Nwogu, Cyril Hart, Victor Obuzor, and Blessing Amadi—cited the tangible successes of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as the basis for their endorsement.

The caucus praised Tinubu’s economic policies, which they said are effectively addressing Nigeria’s long-standing economic challenges, including a burdensome debt profile and high inflation inherited from the previous administration. They highlighted the Central Bank of Nigeria’s printing of ₦22.7 trillion through Ways and Means overdrafts between 2015 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, which contributed to economic instability. In contrast, the caucus noted Tinubu’s achievements, such as declining inflation rates, a reduced foreign debt profile, and promising growth projections supported by the International Monetary Fund, as evidence that the Renewed Hope Agenda is steering Nigeria toward prosperity.

Expressing gratitude for Tinubu’s confidence in their leader, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the caucus commended the President’s public recognition of Wike’s infrastructure achievements. They also thanked Tinubu for his prompt intervention in the Rivers State political crisis, which they said has initiated a path toward lasting peace. The caucus called on Nigerians to rally behind Tinubu’s agenda and urged potential presidential candidates to abandon their ambitions and support the President’s re-election in 2027.

As legislators closely connected to their constituents, the caucus vowed to mobilize Rivers State residents to surpass their 2023 electoral support for Tinubu. They described their commitment as the “mother of all mobilisations” to ensure the President’s re-election, emphasizing that the Renewed Hope Agenda offers the most credible path to Nigeria’s economic and social progress. The caucus concluded by appealing for national unity in consolidating Tinubu’s vision for a prosperous future.
