SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. However, proceedings were cut short after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives.  ROUTE VIOLATIONS: LASG ISSUES STERN WARNING TO 'KOROPE' DRIVERS

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to commercial bus operators, particularly drivers of minibuses, also known as ‘Korope,’ emphasising the paramount need for adherence to traffic regulations

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, who disclosed recently, has directed all ‘Korope’ operators to immediately desist from utilizing unauthorized routes, maintaining that any act of defiance would attract sanctions.

He said the directive is in alignment with the government’s overarching objective to instil orderliness on Lagos roadways and ensure the uninterrupted flow of vehicular movement across the metropolis.

He further articulated that LASTMA operatives have been duly mandated to escalate enforcement strategies aimed at curbing reckless driving and unlawful practices that hinder urban mobility and disrupt the city’s traffic ecosystem.

Additionally, Hon. Giwa issued a directive against the indiscriminate occupation of public roadways for unauthorized parking and loading activities, aggravating traffic congestion and posing substantial risks to other road users. He emphasised that moving forward, all commercial operators must restrict their operations to designated bus stops and terminals to avert unwarranted impediments to vehicular circulation.

“Illegal parking and flagrant route violations have metamorphosed into a grave menace in Lagos, particularly due to the arbitrary conduct of minibus operators. Such transgressions, which impede traffic fluidity and endanger public safety, will no longer be condoned. LASTMA has been expressly instructed to enforce absolute compliance with extant traffic laws and to apprehend defaulters accordingly,” Hon. Giwa asserted.

“Furthermore, strict adherence to designated routes is imperative for security purposes, as it acts as a deterrent against unscrupulous elements who exploit commercial vehicles, particularly ‘Korope,’ for illicit activities.”

Given these directives, LASTMA enjoined all road users, especially commercial transport operators, to cooperate fully with traffic enforcement authorities by adhering strictly to stipulated regulations and fostering a culture of responsible driving.

For reports on traffic infractions, emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, or road accidents, the public is advised to contact LASTMA via its Toll-Free hotline: 080000527862.
