President Bola Tinubu is set to return to Nigeria today, concluding a work visit to Paris, France, that began on April 2, according to a statement from his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, posted on X. The Presidency described the trip as a retreat to review ongoing reforms and strategize for the administration’s second anniversary.
The President’s absence drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders amid escalating insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in Benue and Plateau states, where over 100 people have been killed in recent attacks. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in a statement on April 17 by his spokesman Paul Ibe, accused Tinubu of prioritizing foreign engagements while “Plateau has turned into a killing field.” Atiku urged the President to cut short his trip to address the crisis.
Similarly, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, called for Tinubu to suspend his retreat and return to tackle the deteriorating security situation. In a statement, Obi highlighted the deaths of over 150 Nigerians in attacks across Plateau and Zamfara, stressing that a government’s primary duty is to secure its citizens. “I urge Mr. President to quickly suspend whatever he is doing in France and rush home to take responsibility,” he said.
The Presidency defended Tinubu, stating that he remained in constant communication with key officials, issuing directives to security chiefs to address emerging threats. The administration emphasized that the President was actively overseeing national matters despite being abroad.
Tinubu’s return comes as Nigeria grapples with renewed violence, with calls for urgent action to restore peace in affected regions.
