Dr. Ini Ememobong, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Strategy, and Special Duties, has resigned from his position after Governor Umo Eno’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Friday, June 6, 2025, Ememobong announced his resignation, citing compliance with the governor’s directive that political appointees unwilling to join the APC should step down. “Today, I submitted my resignation to His Excellency in line with his instruction that those who are not joining the APC should respectfully disengage,” he wrote.
Ememobong emphasized that his decision was driven by personal conviction and ideological differences with the APC. “I do not question the Governor’s right to make a political choice, but I am unable to follow that path. My political orientation is rooted in principle, and I have long opposed the ideology and conduct of the APC,” he stated.
He clarified that his resignation was not due to any personal conflict with Governor Eno, whom he described as a “brother and a leader” who entrusted him with significant responsibilities, including oversight of the Ibom Deep Sea Port project. Ememobong expressed gratitude to both Eno and his predecessor, former Governor Udom Emmanuel, for their support during his tenure. “My family and I deeply appreciate the opportunities given to me by both leaders. I am proud of the service I rendered,” he said.
Acknowledging that his decision may not be universally accepted, Ememobong thanked his supporters and reflected positively on his time in public service, stating he would “gladly do more” if given the opportunity.
The resignation marks a significant development in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape following Governor Eno’s unexpected move to the APC, highlighting tensions among political appointees faced with aligning with the governor’s new political direction.
