Cleric Odumeje Urges Nigerian Students to Shun Certain University Courses

Popular Anambra-based cleric, Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, widely known as Odumeje, has sparked controversy with a bold statement urging prospective university students to avoid certain academic disciplines. In a viral video circulating on X on Monday, the outspoken preacher described courses such as political science, history, microbiology, sociology, and library information science as "useless" for students from less privileged backgrounds.

Odumeje, recognized for his theatrical preaching style, argued that these courses offer little value for individuals whose families lack political or governmental connections. "All these poor people, if your father does not have any connection in politics or government, don’t go to school and begin to study political science, history, microbiology, and sociology. These are useless courses. What are you doing with them?" he stated.

He singled out library information science, suggesting that learning a trade like barbing would be more practical. "It is better for you to go and learn barbing than study that course," he remarked. The cleric emphasized the importance of pursuing "meaningful" courses to ensure education translates into economic opportunities, warning that many graduates remain jobless due to their choice of study.

"We don’t waste our time and money on nonsense now. For education to be a blessing in your family, let the course you study in school be meaningful," Odumeje added. He positioned his advice as prophetic guidance, aimed at steering young Nigerians toward practical and rewarding career paths.

The statement has ignited debate on social media, with some praising the cleric’s bluntness while others criticize his dismissal of established academic fields.
