Former Nigerian Coach Denies Mikel Obi’s Claim of Funding Olympic Team’s Flight

Samson Siasia, head coach of Nigeria’s 2016 Olympic football team, has refuted claims by former midfielder John Mikel Obi that he personally paid for the team’s flight to Brazil for the Rio Olympics.

In a recent podcast hosted by Peter Crouch, Mikel Obi alleged that he funded the team’s travel expenses and was never reimbursed due to the misappropriation of funds by top Nigerian football officials. However, Siasia, in an interview with Nigerian journalist Callistus Ebare, denied these claims, stating, “I think he did pay for some of the hotel bills, but that of the flight from the United States to Brazil, Mikel did not pay for that.”

Siasia challenged Mikel to provide proof, saying, “If Mikel has the receipt to that effect, let him show Nigerians that he was the one who paid.”

Despite logistical and financial challenges, Nigeria’s U-23 Eagles secured a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics. The controversy highlights ongoing concerns about the management of funds in Nigerian football.
