Historic Italian Football Club Brescia to Cease Operations After 114 Years

Brescia, Italy – June 7, 2025 — One of Italy’s oldest and most storied football clubs, Brescia Calcio, will cease to exist after 114 years, following the decision by its current owner not to honour a €3 million ($3.4 million) debt.

The news has sent shockwaves throughout Italian football, as Brescia — a club with a rich history and a loyal fanbase — faces dissolution after over a century of participation in the Italian football pyramid. The debt, which was critical to the club’s continued operation and registration for the upcoming season, will not be paid, effectively sealing Brescia’s fate.

Brescia was founded in 1911 and spent many years fluctuating between Serie A and Serie B. It gained prominence in the early 2000s when Italian legend Roberto Baggio played for the club, captivating fans with his enduring brilliance. The club has also produced and nurtured talents like Andrea Pirlo, who began his professional career there.

The current owner, whose identity has become the focus of criticism from supporters and local politicians, has not released a full statement but reportedly declined to settle the €3 million obligation required to secure the club’s professional status. This default means the club will be excluded from all professional competitions and likely liquidated.

Supporters held a vigil outside the Stadio Mario Rigamonti, expressing anger and heartbreak at the loss of a club that represented more than just football — a symbol of community and tradition in the Lombardy region.

Local authorities and former players have called for action to resurrect the club in some form, potentially through a phoenix club model — a new entity that may begin in the lower amateur leagues.

For now, however, Brescia Calcio, a cornerstone of Italian football heritage, is set to vanish from the professional landscape, marking a somber moment in the history of the sport.
