Hoodlums Destroy School in Umuahia as Communities Trade Blames

Tensions have escalated between Okauiga Nkwoegwu and Amachara communities in Abia State following the destruction of school property at Okauiga Nkwoegwu Community Secondary School in Ohuhu, Umuahia North LGA.

Uzomba Ekwuruibe, President General of Okauigo Nkwoegwu Improvement Union, alleged that suspected invaders from Amachara community in Umuahia South LGA stormed Umunenweze and other villages in Okauiga Nkwoegwu, armed with dane guns, cutlasses, and hammers. According to Ekwuruibe, the attackers vandalized the school and boasted of having support from influential figures in government.

Ekwuruibe called on the Abia State government and security agencies to urgently investigate, arrest, and prosecute those responsible. He urged his community to remain calm while awaiting justice.

In response, Amachara Welfare Association President Amarachukwu Uchendu and Secretary Ekeledo Obioma denied the allegations, describing their community as peaceful and dismissing claims of involvement in the vandalism. They stated that the school in question had been in ruins for years since its relocation to Nkwoegwu Central School and urged the public and government to disregard the accusations.

The Abia State government has yet to comment on the incident, as both communities await official intervention to address the escalating dispute.
