The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has expressed relief at the prospect of its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, potentially joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing him of betraying the party’s trust. The statement, issued by NNPP National Secretary Oginni Olaposi on Sunday in Lagos, follows the resignation of APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje on Friday, amid speculations linking his exit to Kwankwaso’s alleged plans to defect to the APC.
Olaposi clarified that while Ganduje’s resignation, attributed to health issues, is an internal APC matter, the NNPP felt compelled to address the issue due to ongoing tensions with Kwankwaso. The former Kano State governor, expelled from the NNPP for alleged anti-party activities, has reportedly insisted on maintaining his membership while facing accusations of attempting to hijack the party.
“Kwankwaso not only tried to hijack the NNPP but also made the party go through avoidable litigations,” Olaposi stated. He noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently restored the NNPP’s original logo after Kwankwaso changed it to that of his Kwankwasiya Movement, sparking years of controversy and legal battles.
Olaposi expressed skepticism about claims that Ganduje’s resignation was tied to a negotiated arrangement to accommodate Kwankwaso in the APC ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He referenced Ganduje’s past remarks that the APC is open to defectors, but added, “We find it difficult to believe that Kwankwaso, who is still struggling to hijack the NNPP, is also negotiating to join the ruling party.”
The NNPP secretary accused Kwankwaso of betraying the trust of the party and its founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, who facilitated his 2023 presidential candidacy. “It would be a huge relief for our members if Kwankwaso joins the APC, as they are in a better position to handle his baggage,” Olaposi said, signaling the party’s readiness to move forward without him.
The NNPP’s statement underscores the deep rift with Kwankwaso and highlights ongoing political realignments as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections.
