Dutch referee Rob Dieperink dies weeks after removal from World Cup officiating list Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, weeks after FIFA removed him from its list of officials for the World Cup. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed his death in a statement, saying it was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the news. His cause of death has not been disclosed. Dieperink was arrested in April by the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom following a report of an alleged sexual assault involving a teenage boy in London. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said officers responded on April 9 to a report of sexual assault at an address in Croydon and arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of the offence.  SDP Chairman Gabam Rejects Suspension, Alleges Plot to Destabilize Party

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has dismissed claims of his suspension, asserting his continued leadership of the party. Addressing journalists on Tuesday at the SDP’s national secretariat in Abuja, Gabam described the purported suspension by a faction of the National Working Committee (NWC) as a “desperate, illegal plot” to destabilize the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gabam rejected allegations of financial misconduct, calling the suspension unconstitutional and orchestrated by individuals lacking legal or moral authority. “No NWC meeting was held to suspend me. This is an attempt to sow confusion,” he stated, shortly after receiving support from NWC members who visited in solidarity.

He criticized a letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the opposing faction, labeling it fraudulent and unrepresentative of the party’s position. Gabam further alleged that “powerful forces” were behind repeated efforts to weaken the SDP, claiming he had survived previous attempts on his life. “These are sponsored attacks from within and outside the party,” he said.

Addressing the financial misconduct allegations, Gabam insisted on his transparency, noting that the party’s accounts have been audited by INEC, reviewed by external auditors, and published in national newspapers. “Every kobo spent is documented,” he affirmed, welcoming any investigation.

Gabam also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prevent security agencies from being manipulated by politicians to suppress opposition or meddle in party affairs. “For democracy to thrive, security agencies must not be used for political witch-hunts,” he warned.
