Augustine Eguavoen, former interim head coach of the Super Eagles, remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their challenging position in the qualifiers.
The 59-year-old, who stepped in after Finidi George’s resignation following two matches, guided the three-time African champions to qualification for the 2025 AFCON before Eric Chelle took over permanently. Currently, the Super Eagles sit fourth in their World Cup qualifying group, needing maximum points from their remaining matches to secure the group’s sole ticket.
“It’s a tight rope, but everything is possible,” Eguavoen told reporters. “With the players we have and Nigerians uniting, it’s doable. I’m 100% sure because the players are determined to reach the World Cup.”
Eguavoen emphasized a forward-looking approach, urging the team to treat each game as a final. “I’m not dwelling on past matches; my focus is on the next one. One game at a time,” he added.
Under Chelle’s leadership, the Super Eagles face a crucial run of fixtures as they aim to return to the global stage.
