David Nabarro, the World Health Organization’s special envoy for COVID-19 since the pandemic began in 2020, died at the age of 75, the WHO announced Saturday.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Nabarro as “a great champion of global health and health equity” and a “wise, generous mentor” to many. Nabarro also served as co-director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London. During the peak of the pandemic in 2021, he urged increased global cooperation and support for poorer nations, calling the crisis “unlike anything else” in his career. Nabarro had previously run for WHO director general in 2017, finishing second to Tedros.
