The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has fiercely criticized Femi Adesina, former spokesperson to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, for his remarks disparaging Nigeria’s healthcare system. Adesina, in a recent television interview, claimed that Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at age 82 in a London clinic, might have died earlier if he had relied on Nigerian hospitals due to their lack of adequate equipment and expertise.
Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro, Chairman of the NMA Rivers State chapter, in an interview with DAILY POST, described Adesina’s comments as an “insult to Nigerians” who depend on the country’s healthcare system for both basic and specialized care. He argued that the remarks reflect the failure of the Buhari administration, under which Adesina served, to advance healthcare development in Nigeria.
“It’s an insult to well-meaning Nigerians to hear such statements from politicians,” Tamunokuro said. “Nigerians receive all kinds of treatments from the same healthcare system that Adesina ridiculed, and many have lived even longer than the late president.” He called on citizens to hold political leaders accountable and question whether they prioritize the nation’s welfare or personal gain.
Tamunokuro highlighted the sacrifices of Nigerian doctors, particularly in Rivers State, who work tirelessly to improve healthcare delivery. He emphasized that the quality and scope of care in Nigeria are expanding, with patients receiving quality treatment and leading fulfilling lives. Instead of seeking medical care abroad, he urged leaders to invest public resources in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure.
“What we need from the government is an enabling environment to improve healthcare,” Tamunokuro stated. “Politicians should invest in healthcare to enhance the quality of care for Nigerians, rather than running abroad for treatment.”
The NMA chairman called for Nigerians to demand clarity from politicians on their commitment to improving healthcare, stressing that such investments would yield better outcomes for citizens.
Former President Buhari, who died after a prolonged illness, was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on July 15, 2025. No official cause of death has been disclosed.
