Local residents observed an influx of the scrap buyers into various areas of the Benue State capital, raising questions and concerns about the sudden movement. Sources indicate that the relocation was part of a broader clean-up operation in Abuja targeting informal businesses considered to be contributing to urban congestion and environmental concerns.
Majority of the displaced dealers have now found their way to Makurdi, setting up temporary locations to continue their trade in recyclable metals and other scrap materials.
Their arrival has sparked mixed reactions, with some residents expressing worries about potential security and sanitation challenges, while others see it as an opportunity to boost local recycling and employment.
