Abia State Cracks Down on Environmental Offenders: 17 Arrested in Umuahia

The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has intensified its efforts to enforce sanitation laws, arresting 17 individuals in Umuahia for violating environmental regulations. The group, comprising 7 males and 10 females, was apprehended for offenses including indiscriminate refuse dumping and littering in public areas, particularly around gutters and residential zones.

The offenders were charged in court and given the option of paying fines as penalties. Speaking to journalists, Mr. Marcauley Okpara, Head of ASEPA’s Monitoring Unit, representing Deputy Manager Catechist Ambros Jonah, emphasized that the arrests are part of a broader strategy to curb environmental violations and protect public health.

“This operation is about more than just arrests; it’s about safeguarding our community from the dangers of pollution,” Okpara stated. He reiterated ASEPA’s zero-tolerance policy for illegal waste disposal, noting that dumping is only permitted between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monitoring teams are now conducting street-to-street inspections to ensure compliance.

ASEPA highlighted the growing issue of littering, particularly with pure water sachets and debris around shops, homes, and markets, labeling such acts as serious offenses. Okpara issued a stern warning to shop owners, tenants, and traders, stating that anyone caught littering or allowing waste buildup on their premises faces immediate arrest and prosecution.

The agency urged residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits, such as bagging refuse for pickup during approved hours, and to report violators. The crackdown follows concerns over blocked drainages, flooding, and disease outbreaks linked to poor sanitation practices.

Environmental stakeholders have praised ASEPA’s proactive measures but called for sustained enforcement and public awareness campaigns to drive lasting change. With this operation, ASEPA has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a cleaner, healthier Abia State, holding offenders accountable to protect the environment and public well-being.
