Atiku Abubakar Condemns Rivers State Local Government Election as “Awful Absurdity”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly denounced the recent local government election conducted by the Rivers State government, describing it as an “awful absurdity” and a “travesty to elective democracy.” In a statement issued on Sunday, Abubakar criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for what he called a “shambolic” electoral process, accusing the party of disregarding democratic principles to secure political advantage.

Abubakar, a prominent opposition figure, labeled the state government an “occupation government” with no legal legitimacy to conduct such a critical exercise. He urged opposition parties in Rivers State to reject the election results outright, arguing that the process lacked credibility and violated democratic norms.

The former vice president called on Nigerians, the international community, and Nigeria’s partners to take note of the “dangerous curve” he claims the administration of President Bola Tinubu is steering the country toward. He also expressed solidarity with the people of Rivers State, whom he described as “victims of political brigandry” by a “power cabal” intent on undermining their democratic rights.

The election, conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, saw the APC win 20 of the 23 local government areas, while the Peoples Democratic Party secured only three, amid widespread controversy and allegations of irregularities.
