Captain arrested for allegedly navigating container ship while intoxicated

A container ship captain was arrested in Seattle after authorities said he operated his vessel with a blood alcohol level six times over the legal limit for commercial mariners.

The captain, in charge of the MSC Jubilee IX, a 333-meter Liberian-flagged container ship, was reported by a Puget Sound pilot to be showing signs of intoxication. The pilot, along with the first mate, safely guided the ship from near Everett, Washington, to the Port of Seattle. After docking at Terminal 5, Coast Guard personnel and investigators boarded the vessel and conducted field sobriety and Breathalyzer tests, confirming the captain’s impairment. He was taken to King County Jail, with charges of boating under the influence referred to the county prosecutor. A relief captain has since taken over, and the vessel has resumed operations. Paul Shultz, special agent in charge of the CGIS Northwest Field Office, said the pilot’s quick action prevented potential hazards and ensured safe passage.
