Governor Umo Eno Denies Rift with Predecessor Udom Emmanuel, Vows to Respect Past Leaders

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has dismissed rumors of a fallout with his political godfather, former Governor Udom Emmanuel, emphasizing his gratitude and continued respect for his predecessor. Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Eno credited Emmanuel’s mentorship for his rise to the governorship and vowed to maintain a cordial relationship with him and other past state leaders.

Eno, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), clarified that he consulted Emmanuel before making the switch. “I consulted with him and told him why I was leaving the party,” Eno said. “Governor Udom Emmanuel is a man I truly respect, and without God using him, I would not be seated here.”

Reflecting on his time under Emmanuel’s administration, Eno noted his roles as Executive Director of Agricultural Investment and Adviser for Lands, describing himself as a product of Emmanuel’s mentorship. “I will never be where Governor Udom is being talked about and I’m his product,” he stated. “He has mentored me, and I served under him.”

Addressing speculations of discord, Eno stressed that his decision to join the APC was a strategic political move, not a betrayal. “The part of mentoring was not that I was going to be in one party,” he explained. “We said I was going to govern the state and provide services to the people. We didn’t talk about staying in one party forever.” He added that political decisions require dynamism and sensitivity to timing, asserting that he has not disrespected Emmanuel. “In my conscience, I have not done any of those. I still enjoy a robust relationship with my political father; we talk and still relate,” Eno affirmed.

The governor also pledged to continue honoring past leaders of Akwa Ibom State, stating, “I will continue to give respect to past leaders of our state.” His remarks aim to quell tensions and reaffirm his commitment to unity and service, as Akwa Ibom navigates its evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
