ISRAELI STRIKES TARGET YEMEN’S CAPITAL DAYS AFTER HOUTHI CLUSTER MUNITION ATTACK ON ISRAEL . (PHOTO).

Israeli strikes target Yemen’s capital days after Houthi cluster munition attack on Israel

Israeli airstrikes struck Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on Sunday, days after Houthi rebels launched a missile at Israel, which the Israeli military identified as the first cluster munition fired by the group at the country since 2023.

The Iranian-backed Houthis reported multiple areas hit across Sanaa. Yemen’s Houthi-run health ministry said at least two people were killed and 35 were injured. Al-Masirah, the rebel-run satellite channel, reported a strike on an oil company, with social media videos showing a large fireball at the site. Israel said it targeted the Asar and Hizaz power plants, calling them “a significant electricity supply facility for military activities,” along with a military site near the presidential palace. Residents described loud explosions near a closed military academy and the palace, with smoke visible near Sabeen Square. Some said their homes were shaken, with windows shattered.

The Houthis have fired missiles and drones toward Israel and targeted ships in the Red Sea for over 22 months, claiming solidarity with Palestinians during the Gaza war. Nasruddin Amer, deputy head of the Houthi media office, vowed to continue attacks unless Israel ends its “aggression” and lifts the blockade. Sunday’s airstrikes marked Israel’s first strikes on Yemen since last week, when it targeted what it said was Houthi-used energy infrastructure.

The strikes followed the Houthis’ claim of firing a new missile at Israel on Friday, reportedly targeting Ben Gurion Airport. Israeli officials said the projectile fragmented mid-air after interceptions and described it as a cluster munition, which disperses multiple explosives and is harder to intercept. Over 10 Israeli fighter jets carried out Sunday’s operation.

Houthi attacks have disrupted Red Sea shipping, through which roughly $1 trillion in goods move annually. From November 2023 to December 2024, the group targeted over 100 ships before pausing briefly during a Gaza ceasefire. A deal with the United States in May ended the airstrikes in exchange for a halt to shipping attacks, though the Houthis maintained they could strike targets tied to Israel. Past Israeli strikes in Yemen, including a May attack on Sanaa airport, destroyed the terminal and damaged at least six passenger planes.
