Actor Jussie Smollett continues to deny claims that his alleged hate crime in Chicago was staged, confronting the controversy in a new Netflix documentary. In “The Truth About Jussie Smollett?,” the former “Empire” star discusses the legal battles surrounding the incident and shares his perspective on the investigation that ultimately questioned his version of events.
The 2019 case began when Smollett reported being attacked outside his Chicago apartment in what he said was a racist and anti-gay assault. According to police, two men allegedly put a noose around his neck and doused him with bleach. While authorities initially treated it as a potential hate crime, the investigation later focused on Smollett as a suspect, with police alleging he hired brothers Ola and Abimbola Osundairo to stage the attack. In the documentary, Smollett maintains his innocence. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter whether someone likes me or doesn’t like me,” he says. “The fact is: I didn’t do that. And that’s all that matters.”
Smollett was convicted in 2022 on five felony counts of disturbing the peace and sentenced to 150 days in jail, along with a $120,000 payment to the city of Chicago. However, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 2024, citing legal issues with the agreement Smollett had reached with the Cook County State's Attorney’s office. The actor later reached a settlement with the city in May.
