Kaduna Islamic Scholars Endorse Child Spacing For Better Family Health

Prominent Islamic scholars in Kaduna State have expressed strong support for child spacing, citing both religious guidance and health benefits for mothers and children.

The endorsement came during a one-day sensitization workshop for Imams and Ulamas, organized by DKT Nigeria International under the theme “Transforming Lives and Strengthening Communities Through Family Planning Services for Young Persons.” The event aimed to connect medical advice with religious teachings by involving respected faith leaders.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Yakubu Arrigasiyyu, a medical practitioner and member of the Council of Ulamas, noted that Islam supports the principle of child spacing.

“We have examined the matter from an Islamic perspective, referencing relevant Hadiths and Qur’anic verses that encourage families to space their children in a way that suits them,” he said.

He emphasized the role of religious leaders in guiding communities, stating that once scholars understand what is beneficial, they can convey that knowledge effectively to their followers. Dr. Arrigasiyyu urged faith leaders to consistently share accurate information with their congregations.

Husseina Dada, Brand Manager for ethical products at DKT Nigeria International, said Islamic leaders were chosen for their influence and trust within society. “We believe they are the best channel to engage on this issue,” she explained, stressing that child spacing is essential for women’s health.

She compared the womb to a balloon that needs rest between pregnancies, noting that adequate spacing allows women to recover physically, nourish their babies, and better manage their homes and careers.

The initiative reflects growing collaboration between healthcare advocates and religious institutions to address sensitive reproductive health topics in a culturally respectful way, with the goal of improving family well-being in Kaduna and beyond.
