Nigerian Federal Government Announces Full Digitization of Civil Service by December 2025

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to fully digitize the operations of the civil service by December 2025, marking a significant step toward modernizing public administration. The announcement was made by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday.

The initiative aims to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and promote transparency across all federal ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). According to Mrs. Walson-Jack, the digitization project will involve the complete automation of administrative workflows, including payroll systems, document management, and inter-agency communications, to eliminate bottlenecks and reduce manual errors.

“This is a transformative agenda to reposition the Nigerian civil service as a model of efficiency and accountability,” she stated. “By December 2025, we aim to have a fully digital ecosystem that enhances service delivery and aligns with global best practices.”

The Federal Government has already begun implementing key components of the project, including the deployment of a unified digital platform for civil servants and the integration of biometric verification systems to improve workforce management. The initiative is also expected to curb inefficiencies, reduce corruption, and facilitate real-time monitoring of government operations.

Mrs. Walson-Jack noted that the government is collaborating with local and international tech partners to ensure the project’s success. Training programs are underway to equip civil servants with the necessary digital skills to adapt to the new system.

While the announcement has been met with optimism, some stakeholders have expressed concerns about potential challenges, including infrastructure deficits and resistance to change among workers. The government has assured that measures, such as robust cybersecurity protocols and phased implementation, are in place to address these issues.

The Federal Government has called on all civil servants and the public to support the initiative, emphasizing that the digitization of the civil service is a critical step toward achieving Nigeria’s broader developmental goals. Further updates on the project’s progress are expected in the coming months.
